Supporting our Democratic Friends and Allies Abroad

Last Saturday, I voted to pass national security bills that support our democratic friends and allies in Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific, and deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to civilians around the world, including in Gaza. Our nation is always at its strongest when we stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends and allies. This essential national security funding makes it clear that we will continue to champion democracy around the world, keep our promises, and stand by our allies.

This legislation was long overdue. House Democrats have been calling on House Leadership to bring forward these urgently needed bills for months. I’m glad to see these bills pass Congress.

South County Economic Development Council Economic Summit

It was great to speak at the South County Economic Development Council’s 2024 Economic Summit this week. I had the opportunity to talk more about what’s being done at the federal level to support our local businesses and communities and how we can sustain and improve the neighborhoods where we work and live. The success of our local businesses is vital to the success of our overall economy. I’ll keep working to advance long-term measures that will support businesses and help them grow.

Constituent of the Month: Meet Llymar Simons

Llymar is a long-time volunteer with the Rosebank Elementary School Library. During National School Library Month, she is recognized for her efforts working with the students and also for her service on the PTA Board and the Yearbook and Fiber Clubs. Llymar is a former bookstore employee, and now she enriches the Rosebank Elementary School Library with her love for books and learning.

In addition, Llymar is also a small business owner. Beyond Llyamar’s professional endeavors, she takes immense pride in being a mother to her two daughters.

Thank you to Llymar for all of her contributions to our community! I would also like to thank Superintendent Eduardo Reyes, Ed.D. and Principal Teresa Echanove-Merghart for welcoming me to Rosebank Elementary to recognize Llymar as our April Constituent of the Month.

ACP Letter

I joined 96 of my Congressional colleagues in calling on House Leadership to take immediate bipartisan action to fund the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP is helping to provide affordable broadband to over 80,000 families in California’s 52nd Congressional District and reducing broadband costs by around $35 million annually.

The ACP helps bridge the digital divide in our district and nationwide. Without action from Congress, the program will run out of funds after this month, causing millions to lose crucial internet access. I am working to protect this program for all who rely on it.

Chicano Park Day

Team Vargas joined the 54th Chicano Park Day commemoration last Saturday to celebrate the spirit of the Chicano Park. I’m proud to have led efforts to designate Chicano Park as a National Landmark site. This status recognizes the artistic and cultural significance of the park and preserves the space for future generations.

Team Vargas got to witness the exciting kickoff of the Chicano Park Mural Restoration Project, including the restoration of the La Virgen de Guadalupe mural. We are proud to be a part of this community and its rich cultural legacy!
